Troubleshooting • Re: Externally powered SSD doesn't work well on RPI4

But your last quote made me thought, I know that if I use external power supply, 4 SSD should take 0.36A at peak time, plus the back-powering issue you just mentioned and taking 0.8A from RPI4 won't cause any issue, do I still need to consider powered hub?
I thought SSDs typically took more than 1A when running at peak power consumption.

Which one is 0.36A peak?
Well, you're right and... partially right.
The 0.36A peak I mentioned was from my USB3 to SATA adapter at USB2 mode. With my test setup, having a external PC power supply powered SATA power, extended the SATA data with a cable to the adapter, I measured the VBUS current, and got 90mA for peak value.
So I think 4x external powered SSD will take no more than 0.36A. But talking about powered-by-RPI-SSD, it does take around 1A to work.

So yeah, both me and you are correct (that being said, if my experiment setup is trustworty enough :)
