Beginners • Re: Modules vs programming your own microcontroller

Incidentally, their Raspberry Pi instructions give you two ways to do these measurements. One is to use their module, which processes the signals and gives you the result. The other is to get audio into the Pi somehow, and process the data stream yourself. This method is perfectly viable, although they claim it's "inefficient". Naturally they sell more modules if they can convince you to do it their way.

I realise that this was your original question, but to be honest, the answer is "it depends". Processing an audio stream on the Pi is more versatile, and you're in complete control of the process end-to-end. Getting canned results from someone else's processor is also fine, as long as you are happy that you don't (or won't) want anything more than the module can provide. It's an excellent solution if you are trying to do something like this with an embedded micro which may have less horsepower than a Pi.
