I had a slightly similar problem using a vga monitor and vga to hdmi adapter. It kept saying out of range.
my fix was to use another monitor, set the resolution to the correct one for my VGA, THEN pull the plug out and plug it into the vga adapter.
IF you try setting the resolution and restarting it resets to the DETECTED value and not the one you want.
I hope this gives a clue that might help solve your issue.....
p.s. I had that PITA of the keyboard/mouse - mine is a bluetooth setup, I have to make sure I wake up the keyboard and mouse at the right moment or it doesn't seem to boot. If that happens, then waking up the kb/mouse sends it to the login screen (boring).
something else i noticed is that things like terminal show a non-active prompt if your keyboard is asleep. (or swiched off)
- when you wake the kb ..... it goes normal.
