@Butch
Thank you so much for taking the time to try and figure this out
According to the information I have about my keyboard, it is a 105-key PC (see attached picture).
Perhaps this could be a possible explanation for the problems described above?
SSH is so far too high a level for me.
If such an update goes through, it would be an appreciated improvement - and I don't think I'm alone in that opinion.

That was interesting information!I just check a Bookworm system that has undergone the "apt update" and "apt full-upgrade" within the last couple of day. The Locale information remains unchanged from en_US and the keyboard is pc104 - "localectl status" and "cat /etc/default/keyboard".

Exactly what I did before I shut down the Pi yesterday (your first suggestion).One possible solution is carefully choosing the username and password characters from the characters that do not change keycap positions on GB and Swedish keyboards. Another option would be a backup SSH connection for access during problem times.

Many thanks for thisI just checked the Pi Imager, Windows V1.8.5, when the password is entered, there is no option to see what was typed. The utility should provide an options to display the password in plain text. I will attempt to leave a change request for Pi Imager to have have this option.
