This remember me two episodes. The first "other context" might be a Pi501...I can understand why Raspberry Pi might have chosen to produce a single board for the Pi 500 and for use in "other contexts".
many, many, years ago I was w0rking in a software house making programs for a niche market. Once after a product had been release we [programming staff] were notified that there were a bug, that appears only when a non standard format was loaded: we fixed it in a couple hours, and found that would have been trivial to add another useful feature.
Wen we presented the update to the commercial staff, including the additional feature, they asked us to remove the feature, so in three months they should have been able to sell it as an improved version with a very useful extension.
Another time a producer put on sale a device that had most basic features but was missing some easy additional features.
It was sold easily since it had very interesting features.
After six months was replaced by a new version almost identical but wit a few changes the made it a lot more useful. Some people the bought the new one, since were not an upgrade path for the old one.
The sad story was that the production dates on the "improved" board were few weeks before the beginning of sales of the "basic" board and no announcement were made on future release of an improved board.
So ........
