I think it is still the case that MicroPython does not currently support USB Host mode, and nor does it or the Pico SDK support Pico-USB-PIO which would be the best way to connect USB Devices IMO, leaving the micro-USB free for connecting to a Pi or PC host, for data or debugging.

I believe CircuitPython supports being a USB Host so might be worth checking that out.
