Guys, it's not a failure to mount problem it's a permissions after mount problem the OP is asking about.
As for //server/share vs //server/share/directory, my experience is that while the man page only refers to the former the latter is accepted and does work. At least it does on RPiOS and, presumably, Debian. Yes, I did just (re)test it on Bookworm.
As for that other user hortimech mentioned, my take on that is that they're confusing cifs/smb URIs with nfs URIs.
