Its an abused term. Most designs are designed with a common negative rail, in a double insulated or battery powered system there is no need to actually ground/earth the negative rail.

With analogue/audio systems and to a lesser degree digital, multiple earth points can cause ground loops which induce voltage fluctuations (eg hum) so some care has to be taken when actual grounding is used.

Grounding and earths are for safety to ensure things are at the same voltage (bonded) and in some safety systems to detect if there is a leak of mains current to earth.
