First of all, this is not for an LED, but a laser diode. 6.5V, 130mA current (power output is 50mW).
Secondly, I need the laser to modulate between 256 levels of brightness, 10–20 million times per second. One method that has been discussed is instead of PWM, I can simply push 8-bits at a time in parallel out to 8 GPIO pins at 20mhz frequency, then pass those into a current-output DAC module. Does that seem feasible?
I could go down to 128 levels (7 bits) and 10mhz frequency, too.
