Ooh, thanks for the guide recommendation! I'll check it out and yeah root access to the drive I realize isn't the most ideal scenario/solution but when I posted this I was frustrated and wanted to find a way to edit the file directly over SFTP and wasn't clear of the implications associated with that .What file system are you using on the drive that you are trying to access?
FAT/NTFS etc don't support Linux/Unix permissions.

Giving root access to the entire drive is a very bad idea...please don't ask me how I know this.
