What file system are you using on the drive that you are trying to access?

FAT/NTFS etc don't support Linux/Unix permissions.

Giving root access to the entire drive is a very bad idea...please don't ask me how I know this. :lol:
Ooh, thanks for the guide recommendation! I'll check it out and yeah root access to the drive I realize isn't the most ideal scenario/solution but when I posted this I was frustrated and wanted to find a way to edit the file directly over SFTP and wasn't clear of the implications associated with that 😅.
