Excellent, thankyou both, particularly for the fast answers. I made sure to mention it was an upgrade as I had a hunch that might have something to do with it. It sounds like there might not be a good way to perform the needed updates as well short of a new install. The Pi 4 I'm using is effectively a server, so a Wayland/pipewire switch wouldn't hurt me.
Ah well. Bad news for me, I'll have to think of another way to upgrade.
