Thanks for those precision PhilE... you aren't making a backup of the old kernel, there's no easy way to recover from a bad build. Similarly, by not changing the LOCALVERSION you run the risk of overwriting the modules for the kernel you've just made a backup copy of, but incompatible modules are usually not fatal unless you are relying on WiFi networking, etc.
We don't see on the pastebin (my bad) but actually I make a full Disk image style backup of the whole SD-card before starting this compiling attempt. So I suppose with Disk image I do not need to edit the LOCALVERSION ?
