Total cost vs. off the shelf mini-pc?Apologies for dragging this thread back on topic...
This is exactly what I've been doing since setting up my Pi5 (overclocked to 3GHz) with a 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD running at Gen 3, and an IQaudIO Codec Zero bonnet with audio in and out.
It now sits in a custom designed 3D-printed case (still in prototype) with a silent 60mm cooling fan and blue SH1106-based 128x64 pixel OLED display on the front running as a 24-hour clock/calendar. Audio is fed from RCA jacks on the back to a Lepy Class-D amplifier driving a nice pair of bookshelf speakers either side of a 32" 4K monitor.
It's used pretty much 24/7 at times for streaming radio/video, Internet access, watching videos from the Pi4B NAS over the network with KODI, running FreeCAD and PrusaSlicer to generate g-code to send to the other Pi4B sitting on the 3D printer running OctoPrint with a Pi Camera Module v2 for monitoring print progress.
The only tasks I'm not carrying out on the Pi5 are gaming and 1080p video conversions due to a lack of processing grunt for those specific tasks, so the main PC gets powered up once in a while for those. Other than that, I'm Pi5 all the way, and it feels good to think of the enormous amount I'm saving on the leccy bill by going this route.
